I-64 Daniel Boone Bridge over the Missouri River

Project Alerts & Updates:

Bike-Ped Trail Open! (updated 6/9)

The new bike/ped trail on the eastbound I-64 Daniel Boone Missouri River Bridge is open.  The path connects the Monarch Levee Trail in St. Louis County to the KATY Trail in St. Charles County.  The Boone Bridge is the seventh Missouri River crossing in the state to have a dedicated bike/ped crossing.  Click here to see photos of the new trail.

The Monarch Levee Trail on either side of the Boone Bridge is also back open.  The trail closed in 2013 during construction.

Old Boone Bridge Demolished (updated 3/7)

The St. Louis County truss of the Boone Bridge was demolished on February 18.  The St. Charles County side was demolished on March 7.  To see photos from both demolitions, click here.  To see videos of the demolition, visit the MoDOT St. Louis YouTube page.

A project to construct a new Daniel Boone Bridge over the Missouri River between St. Louis and St. Charles counties has been funded.  A total of $125 million has been allocated for the project -- that includes money for utility relocation, property acquisition, design and construction of the project.  Walsh-Alberici was selected in 2012 as the joint venture contractor to build the new bridge.

What is the construction schedule? (updated September 2014)

2013 = construction begins on the new eastbound bridge, the Spirit of St. Louis Blvd bridge over I-64 and on a new Chesterfield Airport Road Bridge and North Outer Road connection.

2014 = the new Chesterfield Airport Road bridge and interchange opens by November 2014.

2015 = traffic on the new eastbound bridge by late spring 2015 and rehab work starts in the 1980s bridge, with completion by the end of the year

2016 = the 1935 westbound bridge will be removed

Why is a new bridge needed?

The current westbound Daniel Boone Bridge was built in the mid-1930s, making it nearly 80 years old.  It was not designed for interstate level traffic and has reached a point where it needs regular preventative maintenance.  Moreover the current westbound bridge has three narrow lanes that often get congested during peak travel times.

Where will the new bridge be constructed?

The new bridge will be built upstream from the existing two bridges.  Once it is complete, eastbound I-64 traffic will use the new bridge and westbound traffic will be shifted to what is currently the eastbound bridge.

Will the bridge include a bike-pedestrian lane?

Yes. A shared used bicycle/pedestrian trail on the upstream side of the new bridge opened in June.  It includes connections off the bridge to the Monarch Levee Trail on the St. Louis County side and to the KATY Trail on the St. Charles County side.

What will happen to the current 1935 westbound bridge?

The 1930s westbound bridge was demolished in early 2016.
