Traffic on eastbound and westbound Interstate 64 are shifted as part of the Boone Bridge project. The lanes have also been narrowed to 11-feet each and the speed limit in the lane shift has been reduced to 50 mph. The lane shifts will remain in place until the summer of 2015.
The new eastbound Boone Bridge is scheduled to open to traffic in summer 2015. The change is due to some problems getting foundation work completed in the river last spring. Crews are still on track to finish rehabbing the 1980’s bridge and have it open to westbound traffic in late 2015.
The Monarch Levee Trail remains closed due to construction of the new Boone Bridge. The trail will remain closed approximately 1,000 feet on either side of the bridge until late 2015. Once the trail is reopened, users will be able to access the Katy Trail in St. Charles County by the pedestrian pathway on the bridge.
Rendering of new I-64 Daniel Boone Missouri River Bridge and shared-use path
A project to construct a new Daniel Boone Bridge over the Missouri River between St. Louis and St. Charles counties has been funded. A total of $125 million has been allocated for the project -- that includes money for utility relocation, property acquisition, design and construction of the project. Walsh-Alberici was selected in 2012 as the joint venture contractor to build the new bridge.
What is the construction schedule? (updated September 2014)
2013 = construction begins on the new eastbound bridge, the Spirit of St. Louis Blvd bridge over I-64 and on a new Chesterfield Airport Road Bridge and North Outer Road connection.
2014 = the new Chesterfield Airport Road bridge and interchange opens by November 2014.
2015 = traffic on the new eastbound bridge by late spring 2015 and rehab work starts in the 1980s bridge
2016 = the 1935 westbound bridge will be removed
Why is a new bridge needed?
The current westbound Daniel Boone Bridge was built in the mid-1930s, making it nearly 80 years old. It was not designed for interstate level traffic and has reached a point where it needs regular preventative maintenance. Moreover the current westbound bridge has three narrow lanes that often get congested during peak travel times.
Where will the new bridge be constructed?
The new bridge will be built upstream from the existing two bridges. Once it is complete, eastbound I-64 traffic will use the new bridge and westbound traffic will be shifted to what is currently the eastbound bridge.
Will the bridge include a bike-pedestrian lane?
A shared used bicycle/pedestrian trail will be built on the upstream side of the new bridge. It will include connections off the bridge to the Monarch Levee Trail on the St. Louis County side and to the KATY Trail on the St. Charles County side.
What will happen to the current 1935 westbound bridge? (updated September 2014)
The current westbound bridge will be removed in 2016.
