Route 60 Sound Wall Public Meeting Scheduled
For May 2 in Southeast Springfield

Springfield, Greene County – Residents who live adjacent to James River Freeway (Route 60) between National and Glenstone avenues in Springfield are invited to a May 2 public meeting to discuss the possibility of installing a sound wall, the Missouri Department of Transportation said.

The meeting will be held from 5 until 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 2, at Campbell United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, 1747 E. Republic Road.

At the public meeting, MoDOT Project Manager Don Saiko will present the findings of a noise study, explain the voting process for sound walls and follow up by allowing attendees to ask questions.

Those unable to attend the public meeting are urged to visit an online meeting at www.modot.org/southwest.

The noise study was required ahead of a project to add an eastbound and a westbound auxiliary lane connecting the interchange ramps on Route 60 between National Avenue and Glenstone Avenue.  The auxiliary lane project is scheduled for construction either late this year or early in 2018.

The noise study identified the need for a noise-reducing wall on the south side of James River Freeway east of Fremont Avenue.  While the noise study looked at all areas north and south of James River Freeway, the area on the south side east of Fremont Avenue was the only area that would benefit from a sound wall.

Following the public meeting, property owners who live south of Route 60 east of Fremont Avenue will be allowed to vote whether they desire a sound wall. Only the immediate adjacent property owners that benefit can vote. This means the residents must have a direct line of sight to the highway and no homes are located between them and the highway.

Residents will be mailed a ballot and will have two weeks to return it to MoDOT.

After two weeks, MoDOT will tally the votes and determine whether to move forward with the design of a sound wall.

Residents will be notified via traditional mail of the outcome of the voting.

Construction on a sound wall could begin as early as late 2017 or early 2018, with completion by summer 2018.
