Route 65 Six-Laning Project - Springfield
Update for Week of April 3, 2017
  • Southbound and northbound Route 65 lane closings at night for shoulder paving work
  • Northbound Route 65 traffic shifted to southbound median bridge until late summer; speed limit reduced to 45

Work Scheduled:  

  • Laying asphalt for shoulders along Route 65 in both directions at night
  • Building bridge footings for new northbound Route 65 bridge underneath the highway

Traffic Impacts:  

  • NIGHT WORK: Route 65 lane closings for asphalt work. Work hours: as early as 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.
    • Slight traffic delays occurring northbound during morning rush hour
    • Northbound speed limit reduced to 45 mph; further reduced to 40 mph in crossovers
    • Route 65 will remain open to four lanes most of the time
    • Northbound traffic will remain on southbound bridge until late summer 2017
    • Southbound Route 65 ramp from eastbound Route 60 extended across Springfield Lake bridge. Drivers encouraged to use extended ramp and merge into southbound Route 65 after crossing bridge.
    • Timbercrest Road underneath Route 65, the Galloway Greenways trail and the James River Water trail CLOSED until fall 2017
    • Drivers urged to use alternate routes to get around the Timbercrest Road closing
    • Trail users are urged to use other Greenways trails in the area
  • Route 65 speed limit reduced to 55 mph in work zone

(Weather or construction delays could alter the work schedule.)  

Project Background

  • Widen Route 65 to six lanes – three lanes in each direction – between Route 60 and the Greene/Christian county line south of Evans Road in Springfield
  • Widen and rehabilitate the southbound Route 65 bridge over Springfield Lake to accommodate three lanes in the southbound direction and extend the eastbound Route 60-to-southbound Route 65 ramp
  • Replace northbound Route 65 bridge over Springfield Lake with a wider structure that will accommodate three northbound lanes
  • Extend northbound Route 65 ramps to Route 60

The project is scheduled for completion by November  2017.  

The prime contractor on the project is Emery Sapp and Sons of Columbia.  

The total project cost is $21 million.
