Chestnut Railroad Bridge Project in Springfield
Update for Week of January 23, 2017
  • Chestnut Expressway traffic set to move to temporary bypass on Friday night, Jan. 20; Traffic move rescheduled from Thursday, Jan. 19, due to wet and foggy conditions.
  • During traffic switch, Chestnut Expressway CLOSED between a point west of Ingram Mill Road and Belcrest Avenue from 9 p.m. Friday and 6 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 20-21 

Work Scheduled Following Chestnut Traffic Shift:  

  • Removing concrete median on the closed section of Chestnut Expressway
  • Preparing to install bridge footings on west side of railroad tracks
  • Hauling in construction materials 

Traffic Impacts:  

  • CHESTNUT EXPRESSWAY TRAFFIC SWITCH TO TEMPORARY BYPASS RESCHEDULED FOR FRIDAY NIGHT, JAN. 20:
    • During traffic switch to bypass, Chestnut Expressway CLOSED between Ingram Mill Road and Belcrest Avenue
    • Work hours: 9 p.m to 6 a.m., Friday night into Saturday morning, Jan. 20-21
    • Signed detour during closing: Ingram Mill Road, Cherry Street, Union Avenue, Cairo Street and Belcrest Avenue
    • Following traffic shift to temporary bypass:
      • Two westbound lanes open on Chestnut Expressway
      • One eastbound lane open on Chestnut Expressway
      • Left-turns restricted at Belcrest Avenue/Chestnut Expressway intersection
    • SIGNIFICANT TRAFFIC DELAYS ARE EXPECTED WHEN TRAFFIC IS MOVED TO BYPASS ESPECIALLY ON MONDAY MORNING, JAN. 23
    • Drivers urged to find alternate routes including Kearney Street and Sunshine Street to reach downtown areas of Springfield 

(Weather or construction delays could alter the work schedule.) 

Project Summary:

  • Build a bridge on Chestnut Expressway over the railroad tracks west of Route 65
  • Build new roads on either side of Chestnut Expressway to provide access to area businesses
  • Install a new traffic signal at Ingram Mill Road and Chestnut Expressway
  • First phase of construction: June to December 2016. Prime contractor: D&E Blasting & Excavating, Nixa -- COMPLETED
  • Second phase of construction: January 2017 to November 2017. Prime contractor: Lehman Construction Company, California 
  • Total project cost estimate: $14.8 million
  • Partnership project: city of Springfield, Greene County, Burlington Northern-Santa Fe Railroad, MoDOT 

Completion Date: November 2017

Total Project Cost: $14.8 million.
