New Flashing Yellow Arrow Coming to
Chestnut Expressway/U.S. 65 Interchange

Springfield, Greene County – A flashing yellow turn arrow will be added to the southbound traffic signal at the Route 65/Chestnut Expressway diverging diamond interchange in Springfield starting Tuesday morning, November 1, the Missouri Department of Transportation said.

The flashing yellow will go into full operation starting at 7 a.m. on November 1.

The flashing yellow arrow will allow southbound Route 65 drivers on the off ramp who want to turn left onto Chestnut Expressway to make the turn movement as long as they yield to traffic.

Currently, Missouri state law does not allow drivers making left-turns at a diverging diamond to make the left-turn movement if there is a traffic signal at the left-turn lane.  Essentially, it is illegal to make a left turn on red.

By making the change, drivers will be able to make the left turn from the ramp as long as they yield to traffic before proceeding.

How the flashing yellow works

  • Drivers getting a flashing yellow left-turn arrow can make a left turn, but only after first yielding to oncoming vehicles and pedestrians which have the right of way.
  • A sign mounted next to the left-turn signal display will explain the meaning of the flashing yellow arrow, saying, "Left Turn Yield On Flashing Arrow."
  • When the flashing yellow left-turn arrow stops flashing and becomes a steady yellow left-turn arrow, drivers should treat the non-flashing yellow left-turn arrow just like a standard yellow signal and prepare to stop before the red light appears.
  • More information about the yellow flashing left-turn arrows can be found here.

REMINDER: A flashing yellow left-turn arrow means you must yield to oncoming through-traffic and turn left cautiously only when you see an opening in the traffic coming toward you.
