Packer Road/Kearney Street Intersection: New Traffic Signals Go Into Full Operation Oct. 4
Packer Road Extension Opens Oct. 6

Springfield, Greene County – Kearney Street and Packer Road drivers will need to pay close attention as they travel through the intersection in north Springfield starting Tuesday, October 4, that’s when a new traffic signal begins cycling red, yellow and green, the Missouri Department of Transportation said.

The new traffic signal will go into full operation following morning rush hour allowing drivers access to southbound Packer Road.

Then on October 6, a new section of Packer Road north of Kearney Street opens to traffic.  The new Packer Road will run as far north as Jean Street.

Drivers are urged to use extreme caution when traveling through the intersection of Packer Road and Kearney Street over the next several weeks as construction crews finish work on the intersection project.

MoDOT partnered with the city of Springfield to extend Packer Road north of Kearney Street to Jean Street improving the city street system north of Kearney Street.

Here’s a look at the project:

  • Build a new section of Packer Road north of Kearney Street
  • Add right-turn lanes on Kearney Street to Packer Road
  • Add left-turn lanes on Packer Road to Kearney Street
  • Install a new traffic signal at the Packer Road/Kearney Street intersection
  • Remove the west entrance to the MoDOT District Office along Kearney Street and build new entrances to the MoDOT complex off of Packer Road north of Kearney Street
  • Improve sidewalks at the intersection and make them compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act
  • Resurface the intersection of Kearney Street and Packer Road

The project is scheduled for completion by October  2016.

The prime contractor on the project is APAC-Central of Fayetteville, AR.

The total project cost is $2.4 million.

The project is a partnership between the city of Springfield and MoDOT.
