Two bridges near Jamestown are scheduled for replacement of their bridge decks to extend their functional life. The supporting structures of both bridges are in good condition, but their driving surfaces – the deck – have deteriorated and must be replaced. Improvements planned for both bridges include a new driving surface, updated barriers, and new guardrail at each corner.
The Moniteau Creek Bridge on Missouri Route 179, built in 1967 and rehabilitated in 1997, sees nearly 1,000 vehicles cross it each day. The Moniteau County Route U over Howard Creek has not been rehabilitated since it was built in 1968. Roughly 400 vehicles use this bridge daily.
PROJECT PROGRESS
The Missouri Department of Transportation is in the process of designing new decks for two Moniteau County bridges: Route 179 over Moniteau Creek and Route U over Howard Creek.
The estimated total cost (engineering and construction) for these projects is $2 million. This cost may change.
The community and interested parties have multiple avenues to learn about preliminary designs, submit input, and ask questions during the comment period that runs May 14 - 28, 2024:
- In person - An open-house style public meeting is being held Tuesday, May 14, 2024, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at Jamestown School Gymnasium*, located at 222 School Street in Jamestown where the project team will be on hand to answer questions, provide information, and receive input about the project. There will be no formal presentation, so attendees may come and go as they please at any time during the advertised hours.

Both bridge projects will be part of MoDOT's November 2024 letting when contractors may submit competitive bids. The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission may award the contract as part of their December 2024 meeting and, if the contract is awarded, a notice to proceed date will also be given. That is the earliest date the contractor may begin work.
Rehabilitation work on both bridges is anticipated to take place in 2025. Route 179 and Route U bridges will be closed to all traffic. A signed detour will direct motorists around the Route 179 closure.
Work on the bridges is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

Why is MoDOT replacing the bridge decks?
The supporting structures of both bridges are in good condition, while the decks have deteriorated. The planned work will extend the lifespan of the bridges and improvements are planned for both safety and drivability.
How will the bridge work affect traffic?
The contractor, working with MoDOT, will close each bridge to all traffic for the duration of construction, which is anticipated to last 65 consecutive days for each bridge. At the discretion of the contractor, Route U over Howard Creek can be closed simultaneously with Route 179 over Moniteau Creek.
A signed detour will be in place for the Route 179 over Moniteau Creek bridge while rehabilitation work is ongoing.
A signed detour will not be used for Route U over Howard Creek, but signs located ahead of the closure will alert motorists to use an alternate route.
