Hannibal to Monroe City

  • Project 100% complete
  • Opened to traffic Aug. 7.

  • The east exit to Monroe City is permanently closed.

Monroe City to Shelbina

  • Overall Project - Shelby County area – 70% complete - Contractor will be paving 24 hours/day when weather conditions permit going from the Salt River west to Shelbina. Contractor will be laying base rock on the EBL at the Salt River (West of Hunnewell) and they will also be building access across the new pavement at all entrances and Co Rds.  Co Rd. 486 & Co Rd. 490 remains closed. There will be several county roads closed for a few days when paving through the area. The speed limit in this work zone is 45 mph. The activities listed will create excessive truck traffic. Watch for trucks turning in and out of entrances. The westbound on/off ramps at Routes 36/15 at Shelbina remain closed off while the contractor builds and paves a portion of the new highway, rebuilding part of the ramps, and tie it in to the existing highway. Motorists driving west will be directed to take the first Shelbina exit to access Route 15 north and south. Detours clearly signed. Marion County area – 85% complete - Contractor will be laying base rock on the eastbound lanes just west of Monroe City also building access across the new pavement at all entrances and county roads. Speed Limit at various locations in this area are 35 mph and 45 mph where posted. (updated 11/20/09)

Shelbina to Macon

  • Project 75% complete - Macon/Shelby County - Contractor has completed mainline paving from the West end of the project to Crooked Creek, approximately 1 mile West of Lentner. Contractor continues hand pave at median crossovers and is laying aggregate base in preparation for paving further East yet this year. All major earthwork is complete and only finishing and fine grading remain. Work has resumed on the Route 36 bridge over Route FF since the bridge fills are now complete. The Route 151 bridge over Route 36 was opened last month. (updated 10/16/09)
  • 22.5 miles of roadway
  • July 2010 open to traffic; September 2010 completion.
  • Four new lanes will be built around the Hodgin Heights subdivision at Clarence.
  • The bridge on Route 151 over Route 36 at Clarence has reopened to traffic.
  • The "Cardinal Connector" was specially designed to allow safe access to and from S. Shelby High School at Route FF.
  • Macon to Clarence – to be built on south side.
  • Clarence to Shelbina – to be built on north side.
  • Chester Bross Const., Hannibal, MO.
  • Award Cost $32,109,273.54

    Traffic During Construction

    • Access to the highway through at-grade intersections
    • Median openings will be provided at state routes and county roads 
    • Traffic maintained on the existing Route 36 during construction 
    • Temporary side road closures will be required occasionally 
    • MoDOT will make every effort to minimize inconvenience to drivers
     

    Schedule

     

    Cost/Funding

    • Project construction is estimated at $100 million.
    • Partially funded through a half-cent local sales tax in Macon, Shelby, Monroe and Marion counties - this is estimated to fund $43 million of the project
    • $7 million earmark for Route 36 from Congressman Kenny Hulshof
    • The other $50 million of the project (for construction) is being funded by MoDOT.  All other project costs, including engineering, right of way acquisition, survey, etc., are being funded by MoDOT.
