HANNIBAL - Later this afternoon, MoDOT and its contractor will open another five miles of new highway on Route 36 between the Route 24/36 interchange at the Rocket and the railroad overpass. "We will open the westbound lane, but will limit eastbound traffic to one lane while the existing striping is removed and median crossover work is completed," explained MoDOT Resident Engineer Jared Noland. "There are quite a few crossovers, so there will be periodic lane closures for continued median work," Noland said, and it could take up to three weeks.
Motorists who drive Route 36 regularly probably noticed that the road is not completed on either side of the railroad overpass. "This area will still be two lanes and a work zone," Noland said. "It's been a difficult summer for road work," explained Noland, referencing the unusual wet weather. "The contractor will continue to focus on finishing the connections to the overpass, and we hope to have it done within the next few weeks," Noland said. "Weather permitting," he added.
