Final Miami Bridge Implosion Scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 11

Event to be held at 7 a.m.

MACON - The final section of the Miami River Bridge will collapse into the Missouri River on Wednesday, November 11 at 8:00 a.m. The section is being imploded in the last of a three part demolition project.  The implosion can be viewed from the public river access area near the bridge.

The Miami River Bridge project calls for a partial replacement of the bridge. The overhead truss will be removed along with all the current decking and girders. When completed, the bridge will have new decking and girders and be 26-feet wide (11-foot lanes with 2-foot shoulders). The life expectancy of the new bridge is 50-plus years.

Last year, explosive charges were used successfully in the demolition of the Glasgow River Bridge, which was a project nearly identical to the Miami Bridge project. That project has since been completed.

Miami Bridge Implosion Scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 27

Event to be held at 8 a.m.

MACON - A brilliant boom and cascading lights will once again reflect off the Missouri River as demolition begins on the Miami River Bridge on Tuesday, October 27, at 8:00 a.m.

Explosive charges will be strategically placed along sections of the bridge to maximize clearance of the steel structure without damaging the concrete piers. The piers will be used to support the new bridge once constructed.

The implosion can be viewed from the public river access area near the bridge. Two subsequent implosions will take place over the coming weeks.

Miami Bridge Closure Scheduled for October 5, 2009

Groundbreaking Ceremony Announced

MACON (Sept. 23, 2009) - MoDOT announced it will close to traffic the Missouri River Bridge at Miami on Monday, October 5 at 7:00 a.m. for a period of up to 12 months. The closure was originally scheduled for August, but was postponed until the Missouri River Bridge at Glasgow reopened to traffic, which ocurred on September 24.

To help residents living near the Miami Bridge and/or frequently using the bridge, MoDOT has begun a major effort to improve carpooling options. These efforts include improving one existing commuter lot, providing two temporary commuter lots, and a new web-interface to assist residents with carpooling.

MoDOT partnered with the cities of Carrollton and Marshall to provide safe commuter lots. The three locations are: the existing lot at Route 65 and 10th Street in Carrollton, and temporary lots at Route 24 and 41 in Carroll County and near the intersection of Route 65 and 240 in Marshall. Dusk-to-dawn lighting will be provided at all three locations.  Two lots are currently open for commuter use, and the third lot, located at Route 24 and 41, will be ready for use within 24 hours of the closure.

Additionally, a web interface will allow motorists a safe interactive website to link residents with others in the community who have similar transportation needs. That address is: http://www.modot.mo.gov/services/carpools/CarpoolConnections.htm.

The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission approved the $14.8 million dollar contract to OCCI, Inc. of Fulton. The project calls for a partial replacement of the bridge, nearly identical to what MoDOT has just completed on the Bridge at Glasgow. The overhead truss will be removed along with all the current decking and girders, leaving behind only the large piers in the river. When completed, the bridge will have new decking and girders and be 26-feet wide (11-foot lanes with 2-foot shoulders). The life expectancy of the new bridge is 50 plus years.

A groundbreaking ceremony is also planned for Monday, October 5 at 9:00 a.m. The ceremony will be held at the public river access near the bridge.  The public is invited to attend.

Groundbreaking Ceremony Set for Miami Bridge Project

MACON (July 28, 2009) - MoDOT has announced a groundbreaking ceremony for the Miami Bridge project will be held on Monday, August 10 at 10:00 a.m. The ceremony will be held at the public river access near the bridge.

State and local dignitaries will offer brief comments followed by the groundbreaking.  The public is invited to attend.

The bridge is tentatively scheduled to close to traffic on August 10 for up to 12 months. The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission approved the $14.8 million dollar contract to OCCI, Inc. of Fulton. The project calls for a partial replacement of the bridge, nearly identical to what MoDOT has done this year on the Missouri River Bridge at Glasgow. Miami Bridge Project to Begin

Bridge Closure Tentatively Scheduled for August 10

MACON (July 22, 2009) - MoDOT has announced that work is ready to begin on the Missouri River Bridge at Miami. The bridge is tentatively scheduled to close to traffic on Monday morning, August 10, for up to 12 months. MoDOT will issue a press release if there is a change in this tentative date.

"It was our intention not to close the Miami Bridge prior to opening the bridge at Glasgow", stated Construction Engineer Dennis Brucks.  "However, waiving the fee for the ferry service at Glasgow beginning August 4 gives motorists two options for detour; the Waverly Bridge or the ferry service at Glasgow." The ferry service operates from 6:30 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. seven days a week, and will be in operation until the Glasgow Bridge opens to traffic, which is tentatively scheduled for mid-September.

Delaying the closure of the Miami Bridge would make it extremely difficult for the contractor to meet the 12-month closure requirement, as there are certain phases of construction that cannot be easily accomplished during the winter months and the spring river rises. The contractor on the Glasgow Bridge experienced these weather difficulties during the Glasgow project, which has contributed to the delay in opening that bridge to traffic.

To help residents living near the Miami Bridge and/or frequently using the bridge, MoDOT has begun a major effort to improve carpooling options. These efforts include improving one existing commuter lot, providing two temporary commuter lots, and a new web-interface to assist residents with carpooling.

The three locations are: the existing lot at Route 65 and 10th Street in Carrollton, and temporary lots at Route 24 and 41 in Carroll County and near the intersection of Route 65 and 240 in Marshall. Dusk-to-dawn lighting will be provided at all three locations.  Two lots are currently open for commuter use, and the third lot, located at Route 24 and 41, will open August 10 or 11.

Additionally, a web interface will allow motorists a safe interactive website to link residents with others in the community who have similar transportation needs. That address is: http://www.modot.mo.gov/services/carpools/CarpoolConnections.htm. Motorists can also check this site for availability of all commuter lots in the state.

"We know closing the bridge for this extended period of time will be an inconvenience for motorists, and we have tried to minimize that inconvenience as much as possible with the commuter lots" said Brucks.  "The tremendous cost to construct this project without the closure would have prohibited any permanent solution for this aging structure."

Background Information on the Project

The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission approved the $14.8 million dollar contract to OCCI, Inc. of Fulton. The project calls for a partial replacement of the bridge, nearly identical to what MoDOT has done this year on the Missouri River Bridge at Glasgow. The overhead truss will be removed along with all the current decking and girders, leaving behind only the large piers in the river. When completed, the bridge will have new decking and girders and be 26-feet wide (11-foot lanes with 2-foot shoulders). The life expectancy of the new bridge is 50 plus years.

The bridge, built in 1939, is currently structurally deficient and has a narrow roadway of just 23 feet. In recent years frequently needed maintenance and repairs of the bridge deck and truss have caused the bridge to be closed to one-lane of traffic for extended periods; and completely closed to traffic for short durations.

For more information about the project, contact the MoDOT District 2 Customer Service Center toll-free at 1-888-ASK MoDOT (275-6636). The center is open Monday-Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Miami Bridge Project Will Start This Summer

Commuter Lots and Web-interface will Aid Motorists

MACON (March 5, 2009) - The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission has approved a $14.8 million dollar contract to OCCI, Inc. of Fulton for improvements to the Missouri River Bridge at Miami in Saline County.

The partial replacement requires the bridge to be closed to traffic for up to 12 months.

The project will begin later this summer, sometime after the bridge at Glasgow has been reopened to traffic. “We made a commitment to the communities that we would not close both of these major river bridges at the same time,” said Project Manger Preston Kramer.  “The Glasgow Bridge will open to traffic in early August, so we will close the Miami Bridge shortly thereafter.”

To help residents living near the bridge and/or frequently using the bridge, MoDOT has begun a major effort to improve carpooling options. These efforts include improving one existing commuter lot, providing two temporary commuter lots, and a new web-interface to assist residents with carpooling.

MoDOT is partnering with the cities of Carrollton and Marshall to provide safe commuter lots. Dusk-to-dawn lighting will be provided at all three locations. Additionally, a web interface will soon be established to allow motorists a safe interactive website to link residents with others in the community who have similar transportation needs. MoDOT will provide more information on this effort once the details have been finalized.

The initiatives to improve commuter lot availability and assist with carpooling coordination were based on community input during three public meetings held January 8, 10 and April 23, 2008.
