Buchanan County Route AC to close for bridge repairs

Riverside Road over U.S. Route 36

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Urgent bridge repairs will soon close Buchanan County Route AC (Riverside Road) over U.S. Route 36. May 16 through 19, crews from the Missouri Department of Transportation will replace several portions of the bridge deck with concrete patches and seal the bridge.

To safely complete the work, crews will close the Riverside Road bridge over U.S. Route 36 at approximately 7 a.m. Monday, May 16. It will remain closed around-the-clock through noon on Thursday, May 19. All work is weather-permitting, and schedules are subject to change.

Traffic on Riverside Road will be detoured as follows:

  • Northbound traffic turning east onto U.S. Route 36: no detour needed. Utilize the ramps at the bridge as normal.
  • Northbound traffic turning west onto U.S. Route 36 will instead use the ramps at the bridge to access eastbound U.S. Route 36, travel east to the next exit at Ag Expo Way, loop around at that exit to the ramp to westbound U.S. Route 36.
  • Southbound traffic turning west onto U.S. Route 36: no detour needed. Utilize the ramps at the bridge as normal.
  • Southbound traffic needing to travel east on U.S. Route 36 will instead use the ramps at the bridge to travel westbound to the Interstate 29 cloverleaf interchange. Motorists will need to use the exit for southbound I-29 towards Kansas City, then immediately use Exit 46 A for U.S. Route 36 east towards Cameron.

In addition, to protect vehicles from falling debris, single-lane closures may be necessary during daytime hours on U.S. Route 36 under Riverside Road.

A project to replace the bridge deck is in MoDOT’s Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) for fiscal year 2024. The full STIP may be viewed at modot.org/statewide-transportation-improvement-program-stip.
