JEFFERSON CITY - Spring rains have flooded many rivers and streams in Missouri, sending water out of the banks and onto roads. The Missouri Department of Transportation reminds drivers to "Turn Around - Don't Drown" as highways become impassable.
Motorists are advised to never drive on a water-covered road. Just a few inches of fast-moving water can carry a vehicle away - even a pickup or SUV. Given the muddiness of floodwater, drivers cannot be assured the road is even there. Roadbeds can wash out, leaving deep gaps.
Knowledge of road conditions can help drivers avoid delays and unsafe conditions.
