What Lies Beneath
MoDOT Video Shows Life Cycle of a Highway

JEFFERSON CITY -You may never have thought of a highway as having a life cycle, but it does.  And like most things, highways wear out over time and eventually have to be replaced.

To help explain what goes on beneath your commute, the Missouri Department of Transportation has created a video that shows the aging process of our roadways and how the wear and tear they endure on a daily basis affects what's below the highway regardless of surface improvements.  It also explains how the price tag for replacing the highway grows the longer the work is delayed and why additional funding is needed to keep the state's highway system in good condition. You can watch the video at http://www.modot.org/ or www.YouTube.com/modotvideo.

Created in-house by MoDOT employees, the tape walks the viewer through 50 years of wear and tear, demonstrating how the rock and soil layers that support the road crumble despite repeated improvements to the surface. Interstate 70 is the best example of a highway that has gone through the cycle described in the video and now needs to be totally rebuilt.

The film has already been viewed several thousand times on YouTube, and a number of other state departments of transportation have asked to use the piece to communicate the need to invest in transportation.
