JEFFERSON CITY - The reopening of a small bridge this morning north of King City in Gentry County marked the completion of the 50th bridge project under MoDOT's Safe & Sound Bridge Improvement Program.
Construction on the bridge on Route BB over Island Creek began on June 2 and was completed five days ahead of schedule. Chester Bross Construction Co. of Hannibal was the contractor.
Since spring, contractors around the state have been racing to complete the first projects in MoDOT's push to improve 802 of the state's poorest bridges in the next five years. The first job was completed April 23 in Polk County. Since then MoDOT has completed and reopened a new bridge every day-and-a-half. Another 30 bridges are currently under construction, with five within a week or so of completion, and four more projects begin on Monday.
So far, the average closure duration has been 40 days and the projects have been completed an average of three days ahead of schedule.
MoDOT's Northwest District has more bridges on the Safe & Sound program than any other - 155. Nine have been completed and six are under construction.
