Intersection Improvements
Planning Phase

Each day, approximately 20,000 vehicles travel along this four-lane section of Missouri Boulevard in Jefferson City west of the Missouri Route 179 junction. Currently, motorists attempting to make a left turn between S. Ten Mile Drive and east of Wildwood Drive come to a complete stop in the through lanes causing congestion and back-ups. Safety improvements are needed to create a more efficient and more reliable flow of traffic.

This project includes:

  • Adding a center turn lane between S. Ten Mile Drive and east of Wildwood Drive.
  • Installing a signal at Missouri Boulevard and S. Ten Mile Drive.
    • Motorists making left turns to/from Texas Roadhouse and McDonalds will be rerouted to the new signal.
  • Extending the sidewalk on the south side of Missouri Boulevard from S. Ten Mile Drive to east of Wildwood Drive.

Planning, Design Phase, and Right of Way Acquisition

MoDOT is planning safety improvements to the design of the intersection of Missouri Boulevard and S. Ten Mile Drive. Based on traffic studies, these preliminary plans focus on installing a signal at the intersection and extending the turn lane on Missouri Boulevard to east of Wildwood Drive. These changes will require the acquisition of additional right-of-way.

Project Letting, Award, and Notice to Proceed

The project is currently scheduled to be part of MoDOT's December 2025 letting when contractors may submit competitive bids. The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission may award the contract as part of their January 2026 meeting and, if the contract is awarded, a notice to proceed date will also be given. That is the earliest date the contractor may begin work.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why are these improvements necessary?

Adding a center turn lane to this section of Missouri Boulevard and installing a traffic light at Missouri Boulevard and S. Ten Mile Drive will allow vehicles making a left turn to exit the through lanes while waiting to make a left turn, thereby reducing congestion and traffic back-ups.

Why a signal?

Traffic studies showed that due to the high volume of continuous traffic on Missouri Boulevard and limited space at the intersection, adding a signal was the best and most cost-effective solution to the safety issues at the intersection.

How would construction impact traffic?

Missouri Boulevard will remain open but will be narrowed to one lane in each direction for the duration of construction. Varied traffic patterns, delays, and reduced speeds are expected during the various stages of construction.

When would the improvements take place?

Improvements to the intersection are expected to begin and be completed in 2026, subject to change.
