North Cass Parkway interchange: The new interchange at about 187th Street will open by mid-summer 2010. The bridge over Route 71 is complete, and ramp work is well under way. Work will continue through the winter to complete approaches connecting the bridge to the ramps. Peculiar Drive relocation was completed in September to accommodate the new interchange.
Route 71 at 163rd Street interchange: A $13.5 million project to reconstruct the interchange, replacing the Route 71 bridges with wider, longer bridges to provide room for separate through lanes, turn lanes and traffic signals on 163rd Street is expected to be fully completed by Memorial Day 2010. A ribbon cutting ceremony Dec. 17 marked the opening of all ramps and mainline Route 71.
52 miles of state routes in Cass County resurfaced by Nov. 25: Fifty-two miles of less-travelled routes were cold milled to repair and stabilize the roads’ base and then one-inch asphalt overlay will give the roads a smooth surface. The $2.8 million contract by G&M Concrete and Asphalt was completed by November 2009.

I-35: On March 15, MoDOT began work along eight miles of I-35 between the Clinton County line and Fishing River just south of Kearney. The work includes extensive road improvements to provide a new roadway, in addition to in-depth bridge repairs on both the north and southbound lanes this year. Based on the type of work to be performed on both directions of I-35, traffic has been shifted from two lanes to one lane, head-to-head traffic through the area. MoDOT will take advantage of the closed interstate to also rehabilitate ten bridges to avoid inconveniencing the motoring public at a later date. These structures include Fishing River, Route 92, Route 33, Clear Creek and Holt Creek in both directions. These bridges will receive new bridge decks and driving surface to prolong the life of each bridge. All work is expected to be complete by November.
Route AA (Waukomis) and Vivion Road: MoDOT and the city of Riverside are providing intersection improvements to improve safety at Vivion Road and Route AA (Waukomis). This intersection will include a signal with turn lanes from Vivion Road to Route AA.
Route 9 interchange at Briarcliff Drive: MoDOT in conjunction with the Briarcliff Development Company began intersection improvements at the Route 9 and Briarcliff Drive interchange. Crews began work on the southern portion of this project, including a new on-ramp from Briarcliff to access northbound Route 9, and new off-ramp from southbound Route 9 to access Briarcliff. The addition of two, dual-lane roundabouts at both sets of ramps will improve traffic flow through the busy intersections. Crews will also reconstruct the on-ramp from Briarcliff to southbound Route 9 and the off-ramp from northbound Route 9 to Briarcliff to increase capacity and tie into the new roundabouts, and relocate Tullison Road and Park Drive to tie into both intersections. Motorists should expect delays as they drive through the area. Additional lane closures and ramp closures should be expected as crews complete each phase of construction.
This project will cost $6.5 million, of which $2.5 million is provided by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. A cost share between MoDOT and the Briarcliff Parkway and Highway 9 Transportation Development District will fund the remainder.
The Heart of America Bridge, which connects Downtown Kansas City with North Kansas City via Route 9, will be reconfigured to provide a barrier-protected multiuse path for bicycles and pedestrians. Total project costs are $7.1 million — $4,545,000 of the project is funded by ARRA funds.
Currently the project is scheduled to be let Dec. 18 with construction to begin in early 2010.

Route 150: Reconfigure and reconstruct interchange at Route 150 in Grandview and Kansas City. The $47 million project is nearing a halfway mark, now that the southbound mainline bridge has opened and traffic has shifted over to it. The Route 150 ramp to southbound Route 71 is now open. Next comes completion and opening of the southbound Route 71 to Route 150 ramp and progress on outer road bridges. The new, single-point, urban interchange will be complete by late 2010.
Route 150: Widening to four lanes from east of Route 71 to Horridge Road in Kansas City as part of a bigger project that will include widening to just west of Route 291 in Lee's Summit. The $30 million in improvements will be completed in late 2010. A portion is expected to open to Peterson Road by early spring 2010.
I-470 and Strother Road Interchange: The Strother Road Interchange is on schedule to be complete by August 2010 at a cost of $15.8 million through a cost share with the city of Lee's Summit. Crews are finishing up on the intersection of Independence Avenue and Ralph Powell that was closed to tie the side streets into the new interchange at Strother Road and I-470 and should be back open to traffic by July. In addition, crews will be constructing the new portion of Strother Road to go under I-470 and complete the new ramps, completing the entire interchange. Auxillary lanes will also run along I-470 from northbound Route 291 to Strother Road and from Strother Road to Colbern Road to improve traffic flow through the area.
I-470 and Route 50 Interchange : The construction for a half diamond interchange at Blue Parkway including a collector distributor lane on EB I-470 and WB I-470 in Lee’s Summit is on time and on budget. Crews completed both of the half-diamond interchanges at Pryor Road and Blue Parkway. Currently, motorists will see additional work with ramp closures as they move through the area. The entire project, including the connector bridges connecting Blue Parkway with Pryor Road, will be complete by Summer 2010 at a cost of $46 million.
Recently, this job received the Kansas City Business Journal's Capstone Award in the infrastructure category.
I-70 and Woods Chapel Interchange: MoDOT and the city of Blue Springs are currently designing a new Diverging Diamond Interchange at I-70 and Woods Chapel Road.
This almost one mile corridor between the westbound ramps at the I-70 and Woods Chapel interchange has experienced large amounts of growth, which in turn has created the need to improve the roadway and the I-70 interchange. With the addition of the comments received from a Public Hearing in late 2009, the final plans will be complete and submitted in spring 2010 with construction beginning in summer 2011. All work on Woods Chapel and at the interchange is scheduled to be complete in fall 2013. Click here to view the online public meeting.

Route DD: Resurfacing from Route 23 to Route 13 and construction of a new interchange with relocated Route 13 in Warrensburg. This $1.1 million project is midway to completion, which is scheduled for the end of 2010.

Lexington Gap, relocating Route 13: This project is on schedule to be complete in the fall of 2010. Route 45: MoDOT in conjunction with KCP&L is replacing the BNSF railroad bridge just north of Weston. Awarded to L.G. Barcus and Sons, Inc., this $3.7 million cost-share project with KCP&L will replace the 73 year-old-structure. Soon, the more than 6900 motorists driving through the area daily will see construction of the new bridge to the west of the existing structure. Higher traffic volumes and larger truck loads have made it necessary for MoDOT to address this ailing bridge. In addition, crews will be on site to remove the temporary bridge recently used to move traffic around construction of the new Bear Creek Bridge.
Route HH: MoDOT will replace the Route HH Bridge over I-29 in Platte City through funding received by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which accelerated the $1.1 million bridge replacement into 2010. The bridge will be closed on April 1 for three months while crews replace the aging structure.
Route 45: The roundabout at Route 45 and Route K is complete with traffic using the new intersection. Work is still underway on the project with a smaller roundabout being constructed to the south at Brink Meyer and Union Chapel Roads to tie them into the newly constructed portion of Route K south of the new, larger roundabout. This project is expected to be complete by August.
Route 45: MoDOT will begin work on widening Route 45 between Route 9 and Route K through the city of Parkville. This includes an additional driving lane for both east and westbound Route 45 traffic allowing for better and safer traffic flow through this thriving area. In addition, the city will build a bicycle and pedestrian path to run parallel with Route 45. Due to some funding issues, this project has been put on hold until late summer 2010.
