Alternative Fuels

MoDOT uses more ethanol and biodiesel fuel a year - three million gallons of E-85 and B20 - than all other state agencies combined.  That’s enough fuel to drive a car to Mars and back.

Missouri law requires new state vehicles to meet or exceed the corporate average fuel efficiency standards of 33.3 miles per gallon for passenger cars and 23.9 miles per gallon for light duty trucks. MoDOT has exceeded these mandates, achieving 36.1 miles per gallon for passenger cars and 32.4 miles per gallon for light duty trucks.

  • In the last 5 years, MoDOT has used 10,347,478 gallons of biodiesel fuel and 110,276 gallons of ethanol fuel.
  • MoDOT continues to earn Biodiesel Tax Credits for proactively purchasing flex fuel compatible vehicles to incorporate into our fleet.
  • During the warm months of April through October, MoDOT utilizes a B20 biodiesel blend and requires fuel suppliers to supply our tanks with this type of fuel.
